Phase 1 (Year1-3) Writing

We use a 'Talk for Writing' approach to teaching writing, inspired by educationalist Pie Corbett. Before children can write a story, they need to talk a story. At the core of this is children enjoying and sharing stories. For example, children in Year 1 and Year 2 learn to tell a story off by heart once a half term and they tell this story with expression and actions. Once the story is learnt, the children are encouraged to adapt it and make their own, for example by changing the characters or setting.

Teachers will capture children's ideas, and model how to apply grammar skills from our grammar progression document.  Children then write out the innovated story in manageable sections. Children receive 'next step' feedback with teachers following our Feedback Policy. It is a very supportive and structured approach, so children gain confidence and know more to help them remember more.
