Spring 2! Fun on the Farm!

Week 1: How to care for animals

Welcome back to our second half term of Spring! We kicked off our week with an amazing launch by visiting our local pet shop. Each class received a special delivery, for Chestnuts, it was Sunshine the rabbit and for Walnuts it was Chocolate the dog, who are our new class pets! We have been super excited and as writers, we wrote instructions on how we could care for our class pets. As communicators, we better understood what different animals would need to help keep them safe and alive. As part of our visit to the pet shop, we explored products we would need to care for our pets. We used our mathematical knowledge to keep our purchases within our £10 budget too! During our visit, we demonstrated our fantastic communication skills and beautiful manners to the shop workers who assisted us in finding everything we needed

Week 2: Habitats

We have had another busy week this week and were even visited by the farm where we got to see lambs, baby pigs, donkeys, turkeys, ducks and a dog! As scientists this week, we learnt about our senses and went on a senses hunt around school. We noticed things we could: see, touch, smell, hear and, at lunchtime, what we could taste. Then, as writers, we used our knowledge of sentences to read and orally compose 'I can see...' poems using our sense of sight. We explored poetry and how some poetry rhymes and some doesn't. As mathematicians, we continued our learning all about shapes, this week focusing on how two smaller shapes can create one larger shape e.g. two triangles can create a square. Also, as scientists, we focused on where animals live (their habitats) and was able to continue this learning when the farm paid us a visit. We were able to identify all of the things that the animals on the farm need to make a good habitat.

Week 3- Lifecycles

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the pedal push this week and donated! We had a fabulous time showing off our amazing bike and scooter riding skills, all of us were involved and engaged and it was most definitely the highlight of our week! As mathematicians this week, we enjoyed shapes and used tree maps to sort the shapes and explored the 2D faces on 3D shapes! We were super lucky to get a visit from the lovely ducklings which linked wonderfully to our learning as biologists all about lifecycles. We explored the life cycle of a duck and a butterfly! Continuing as scientists and as part of science week, we were lucky enough to get a visit from Year 5 who helped us find out more about lifecycles.

Week 4- Animals and their young

As artists and designers this week, we looked at the work of Saulo Hernandez who was a paper mache artists. We explored designing our creation first and then using that to make our creation. We linked our art work to our sub-topic this week of animals and their young by designing a baby animal e.g. bunny, lamb, piglet. We used our knowledge, as biologists, of the similarities and differences between animals and their young to support our design.

Week 5- Jobs on the Farm:

This week, we have explored the different roles there are on a farm. Within this, as communicators, we explored the different farm vehicles that would be required to carry out most jobs on the farm. We compared similarities and differences between past and present farm vehicles. We then used this knowledge, as designers, to take part in a 'big build' where we worked as a team to design and create a farm vehicle using junk modelling. Once we completed this, we completed the process by using our yellow hat and black hat thinking to discuss, what went well and what could have been even better. We had a brilliant time and used our knowledge as mathematicians to identify the different 3D shapes we were using to create the farm vehicle.

Week 6- Farm to Plate, Eid and Easter!

We have had a busy last week of term! This week, as theologists, we explored both the Islamic festival of Eid and the Christian festival of Easter. We explored how Muslims celebrate Eid and explored the Easter story by sequencing the events in order. As creators, we completed our animal paper mache masks by using joining techniques to add ears and paint to add a face to them! As writers, we sequenced the story of The Little Red Hen. We then used this knowledge, to explore how milk, cheese and bread comes from the farm to our plates. Ask us about the journey these products take! We have had a brilliant Spring Term and look forward to more fun filled learning in the Summer Term!
